Crystal Blue

Recorded in Edinburgh in January and February 2022.

For my 4th album I aimed to create a sound and style quite different than previous music, replacing banjo and guitar with dense vocals, synths and brass. Several of the songs were written and refined in a week I spent in a barely-post-lockdown Tenerife, surrounded by epic clouds, cliffs and mountains. The cover is a photo of the lighthouse at Punta Del Hidalgo. 

The album opens with a song that experiments with sampled and looped vocals accompanied by a PO12, before breaking out into a brass arrangement that continues through the next two songs.

I experiemented with different ways to prepare my piano throughout the album, such as duct tape on the title track and a blanket on track 8.

Many thanks to Ps&Gs church in Edinburgh for many things, but in particular for allowing me to record brass in their space.
